Another important craftsman in Ilirska Bistrica is shoemaker Toni (Ivica Jantović) on the Bazoviška street 6. As a young boy he ran away with a small boat from island Lošinj to Italy. If Italian police have caught him, he would be immediately turned over to Yugoslavian authorities. Baring this in mind, he continued his journey to France, where he joined the French Foreign Legion for which he fought on several missions in Algeria. After two years in the army, he moved to Nice where he was working as a hotel receptionist. Between 1976 and 1996 he was working and living in Opatia (small town close to Rijeka). When in 1996 a local shoemaker from Ilirska Bistrica passed away, the locals asked Jantović to come and work in Ilirska Bistrica. He accepted the invitation and worked as a shoemaker in his shop until 2015. He passed away in 2017 as the last shoemaker in Ilirska Bistrica.
